Christina Can Draw is a drawing project started in 2010 by Christina Suen, a Hong Kong illustrator who currently works and lives in Shanghai.
Christina is influenced by artists such as Lucien Freud, Jan van Eyck, and her love and admiration for the littlest things in life. At times she also likes to look into space and indulge herself in thoughts of nothingness. This gives her a sense of reality.
As a Graphic Design student, Christina started making meticulous drawings using markers and technical pens. In her college days, Christina spent the majority of her spare time making paintings. Her objects were often old people, as she adores the various stories hidden behind each of their wrinkly faces – signs of history and time.
Her drawings from A Series of People Standing began after a trip to London in 2010. Christina randomly befriended a group of Gothic youngsters, and was immensely drawn by their dark clothing style and lace accessories. She finished the first drawing of the series – Gothic People – an inspiration from her trip. Gothic People depicts a pair of expressionless couple standing while spacing out; the image resembles a vintage wedding photo.
Besides portraits, Christina also creates drawings of other styles. Often surreal, her styles show influences from heavy dosage of Japanese horror comics she read as a child.
This form is part of the archive and no longer accepts submissions.
