A group of students from the International business school KaosPilots in Denmark will join the social entrepreneurial workspace Xindanwei in colaboration to realize the Oasis Game.
The KaosPilots work within the fields of creative business-, leadership-, project- and process design.
They will introduce us the Oasis Game, which is built on methodology developed by the ELOS foundation, Brazil. The idea is to facilitate a group of volunteers to find a need in a local community in Shanghai, and empower locals to meet the need in collaboration with the volunteers. They are investigating the world EXPO theme “Better city, Better life” seeking to implement and empower life improving initiatives in cities.

Last Saturday was an awesome day at Xindanwei. The volunteers did such a great job with the workshop!!!!
We have worked around 8 hrs with the Community of Xindanwei and the members of Chinese Club.
With the support of the kaospilots, the volunteers have gone trough the 6 disciplines of the Oasis game where the level of creativity and reflections in each were surprisingly high taking in consideration that we only had one day of training with the volunteers.
There were so many good ideas and so many fun exercises that we are definitely taking back with us to Denmark!!!! (thanks guys for the apple song :-0)
In several occasions I felt really touched by their way of talking about the Oasis game and I honestly believe that the beauty of this project is not only about implementing the tools, it is more than that.
It is about changing people’s mind set, it is about feeling the change in ourselves, for us, for our community, for our society and for a better world.
Last saturday, we had one of the most beautiful experiences and it is always nice to hear that many amazing people want to keep the Oasis not only in Shanghai, but in more places around the country.
Thank you so much Xindanwei, for give us the freedom of creativity, for keeping your doors open to new ideas and for letting us make a dream come true!
Chen Xu and Liu Yan, I hope we took a good care of your baby Xindanwei, because we all love it!!!!!

Is saturday morning and we are all getting ready to have a great workshop with the Xindanwei community.
After the training with the volunteers last wednesday, I must say that the volunteers are pretty exited about the Oasis Game and the idea of taking this project further.
A community can work together in a cooperative and an imaginative way. And our biggest dream is to make a stronger community culture at Xindanwei, a space that promotes creativity, joy sharing and collaboration.

Dear All members, friends, amigos, supporters, stakeholders…..
Last friday, the 30th of April Nicholas received a phone call, just before the Danish Consulate went home for holidays.
The message was that Chuansha needed us to contact the Danish Consulate in order to make them contact the Foreign Affairs in China. A sideways communication was necessary for the project to be approved.
This we could not have foreseen – yet, it did not come as a surprise to us!
As a result, we were confirmed yesterday morning that it was a fact!!!!… WE LOST THE COMMUNITY!!!!!
Yesterday, we spent the whole day working and brainstorming to look for different solutions.
To be honest, I can describe how many emotions we put on the work table. But the only thing we did it was not to loose the hope to have an Oasis game in Shanghai, in a chinese context with chinese partners.
We still had many volunteers supporting us, a strong internal team work and the confidence of making the Oasis in Shanghai.
We worked the whole day in opening up for some other possibilities to keep the Oasis Game.
And this morning I received a call from Chen Xu…
Xindanwei is our client but now they will be the community we are going to work with!
She said the most beautiful words… “We are together in this and we are going to make it together”
I was touched by her words and we are so so so happy to have Xindanwei with us and to have some others that want to support us to make the Oasis Game come true!!!!
Today is going to be a long day but a great day, full of hopes and positive vibrations!!!
We are working on the volunteers day and on the presentation for tomorrow to Xindanwei.
I will tell you more tomorrow.
See you all,
Big kiss

The Oasis Project aims directly to create a better community by empowering the local citizens to build spaces to strengthen the community and evoke a better life for their inhabitants.
As we see it, the Oasis game is a community project to improve people’s life in their communities by sharing common dreams and make them come true.
Therefore it is important for our project to be linked to the World Expo and it´s theme “Better City, Better Life”.
The Aim and Challenge of this assignment is to display the potential of collaboration and new understandings that come from the interaction Brazilian work methods meeting Chinese culture and potentially spark innovation and collaboration.
The government officials had been given our criteria for choosing a community and they will select one which specifically matches ours and their requirements.
And to get their approval we have been in contact with some authorities that can support our project. We have worked with several partners in Shanghai such as the Nordic Light House, the Expo Pavilion and the Danish Consulate.
A a result of our collaboration The Oasis project will host 1 or 2 events at the Nordic Lighthouse during the Expo.
This will hopefully create an awareness and public relations to the visitors of the Expo towards our work with the community in a Chinese context and by that strength our relation with Chinese government officials and the Danish authorities based in the country.

The ever expanding network around the Oasis Game Shanghai has made it increasingly easy to contact and engage volunteers.
The first volunteer meeting was held the 27th of april at Xindanwei.
The meeting was a very positive experience and we had planned it to be a mixture of team-building process exercises and a presentation of the Oasis Game and the project in Shanghai.
All of the present potential volunteers thought that the evening had been inspiring and fun.
Everyone expressed motivation to engage in and to be a part of the execution of the Oasis Game Shanghai.
The fact that all of the volunteers are bilinguals is a valuable gift for the execution of the Oasis Game.
This will enable a more direct contact between the community members and the volunteers as well as it will render superfluous the use of external translators and thereby ensure a more direct communication path between us and the community.
The next step is to plan and carry out the first Oasis Game training workshop for the volunteers. We want to combine Kaospilot process exercises with the Oasis Game Methodology and use our skills from the 3rd semester as graduated process leaders in the following steps of the Oasis Game.

On tuesday, April 27th, we sent a small delegation from the team to have a meeting with Gary Hu from SRCB and Mr. Lu who is the lulingdauo of Chuansha, another highly ranked government official to discuss the possibilities of working with a community in Chuansha District, in Pudong.
We had invited a translator, Betty which is very professional and has priory worked for The Red Cross in translating delicate conversations.
As a result of our meeting, they were willing to work with us and they found this new approach to community development to be fascinating and interesting. We foresee a possibility for a long term collaboration between the authorities and The Oasis Game.
They also thought that we must be crazy to think that we would have time to reach through all of the steps of the Oasis Game within two weeks. To some extend they are right – we are under time pressure, but with 35 motivated volunteers and the official support, we can make it possible in China!
The final choice of community has not been made yet. The government officials had been given our criteria for choosing a community and they will select one which specifically matches ours and their requirements.
Before we can start the actual work within the community, we need to get a final permission which depends on the relation of our project to the World Expo. Nicholas went to a meeting with the Danish Consulate to present the project and obtain an official letter verifying the collaboration between the Danish Pavilion at the Expo and the Oasis Game Shanghai.
Tomorrow we will hopefully have the papers which need to be sent to the officials -
And the Oasis Game can take off for real!!!!!!

The group has been scattered all over Shanghai investigating communities and contacting officials and NGO´s for potential collaboration.
We are working on a set of frames for presenting the places we have visited internally in the group and we have agreed upon a set of criteria on which we will base the selection of the final community
The community criterias:
-Project vs. process (we are doing a project not a process)
-Someone who wants to change (In order to make a change, we need people in the community to the change)
-Time (It has to be realistic time wise for us to create a success)
-PR friendly
-LEGAL
-The 6 disciplines
-Growth (Secured sustainability and the conditions for growth)
On monday April 26th we had a meeting with Xiaoqian, a student of the Onghua University of Shanghai who was very interested in working with us and who would like to engage in the work of recruiting volunteers for the execution of The Oasis Game Shanghai.
We will also present the project to the volunteer group connected to a Chinese NGO called Hands-On Shanghai.
On tuesday April 27th we are hosting our first volunteer meeting at the Kaospilot headquarters at South Zhongshan Road, “The Cool Docks” at 7pm.
We have invited 600 potential volunteers and we are excited to see how many will join the meeting and how many will feel inspired to join us for the adventures ahead.
In the coming week, we will also have a meeting with Gary, Vice-president of the SRCV Bank – a man of high influence and good connections with the government. We will discuss the possibilities of working with a community which he has suggested for us and the possibility of exchanging services in order to seal a good Guanxi bond and to ensure that the collaboration will be a good experience to both parties.
We are working closely together with both the people of Xindanwei, the client the project, who have offered their help in establishing connections to communities and also with the mother organization, The Elos Foundation Brazil, with whom we have weekly guidance meetings across continents and despite the huge time difference.

The Oasis Game Contract with Xindanwei.
Background for the assignment:
ELOS foundation Brazil was founded in 1995 on the initiative of various students. The foundation started two different initiatives Warriors Without Weapons and The Oasis Game.
The purpose of The Oasis Game is community development by creating and anchoring entrepreneurial spirit within the locals. We are investigating the world expo theme “Better City, Better life” seeking to implement and empower life improving initiatives. We are going to test a Brazilian method in a Chinese context and thereby explore the contextual use of change making processes within a hands on project. The idea is to connect with a community and discover the possibilities and resources with the local people. We will engage the locals in facilitation of workshops with the purpose of finding a common need. Together with the local resources we will meet the need and strive to reach the dream for a better community.
Philosophy and disciplines: The philosophy of The Oasis Game is based on the power of relationships, of dreaming, and on beauty, joy and pleasure. The six disciplines are Appreciative gaze, focusing on what we have and not what we don´t have. Relationships, the affection to take care of each other and to connecting with values. Dream, The best that the world can be. Design, The best shape, not only practical but needs soul “design thinking”. Miracle, we aim beyond the possible. Celebration, celebrate the outcome and evaluate, dwell in the moment, and reflection.
Assignment:
To find a community in Shanghai, connect and discover the possibilities and resources within the local people in order to empower them to meet the current and future needs, with a special focus on anchoring the spirit of entrepreneurship and caring. We will execute one Oasis Game during the project time.
Purpose & targets of the assignment:
Purpose: Mental change – Creating the caring and entrepreneurial spirit. To touch and move people incl. us. To be a catalyst for change creating long term empowerment within the community for the people to be able to meet their needs in the future.
Targets: Working with, not for. In order to create sustainability in the development of the communities, thus creating “Better city, Better life”.
THE CLIENT
After a few meetings with different organizations we found the perfect match.
Xindanwei = “new work unit”.
“Xindanwei isn’t just about sharing office space and desks, it is run more like a club of creative workers. Xindanwei is a community of freelance professionals, start-up entrepreneurs, tech workers, writers, designers, architects, artists, students and others from overseas and China, whoever thinks working with others cool people are more productive, more inspiring and a lot more FUN!”
