Contemporary art entered the center of discussion in the Chinese art world three decades ago. However, it has been only ten years since the concept of ‘Contemporary Art’ was first introduced to mainland China and subsequently entered our discussions. During these ten years, we’ve come a long way in the exploration of “Modern Art”, “Avant-garde Ar”, “Postmodern Art”, “Experimental Art”. Now it’s crucial to ask the question “What makes what we’re seeing today ‘Contemporary?’” and the issue of the “contemporaneity of art” is especially relevant to our time.
Beepub Publishing Co., Ltd (Sina Weibo @蜜蜂出版官方微博 ) is a fledging company. The majority of the books published by Beepub are works in humanities, social sciences, and art. It is the first time for Beepub to plan and publish books on contemporary art on such a large scale. Its great endeavor to publish contemporary art theory books has also made Beepub the first Chinese publishing company that has achieved such feat.
The first batch of “Contemporary Art Book Series” includes 6 volumes: ‘Curators and Curatorship’, ‘Contemporary Discourses’, ‘Creative Spatial Experiments’, ‘Art Collection’, ‘Media Arts’, and ‘Cinema’. These 40 books cover many aspects of contemporary art, including operations of art galleries, curatorial practices, art criticism, art creation and art marketing. The whole book series were made possible under the collective collaboration of DONG Bingfeng, HU Fang, PAN Guangyi, YUAN Xiaoying/Juliette Yuan, YANG Beichen and ZHANG Yehong.
During the 2012 Shanghai Biennale, Beepub will hold “Contemporary Art Book Series” New Book Launch on 2012 September 30, in collaboration with Xindanwei (Shanghai). The ten books which will be released are The Future is Now: Art, Technology, and Consciousness by Roy Ascott (UK), Context Providers: Conditions Meaning in Media Arts edited by Christiane Paul (USA), Troubled Laughter by HU Fang (China), Chronology by Daniel Birnbaum (Sweden), A Brief History of Curating by Hans Ulrich Obrist (Switzerland), Going Public by Boris Groys (Juliette Yuan ed.), e-flux journal: What is Contemporary Art?, The Nightmare of Participation by Markus Miessen (Germany), and Collecting Contemporary Art edited by Andrea Bellini (Italy).
For New Book Launch, Beepub will invite some foreign authors and planners of “Contemporary Art Book Series”. They will hold discussions around topics and issues in The Book of Action, What is Contemporary Art and What is the Future. We’d cordially extend our invitation to all of book lovers to attend our New Book Launch. Hope to see you there!
