Xindanwei and XinCheJian have ran a few Xinshanzhai talks to discuss the open source hardware and open source innovation. We have done two with SeeedStudio and IDEO about a year ago. We are looking to restart this series of talk with DFRobot kicking off the talk again. We have invited the founder of DFRRobot about his experience about how DFRobot gets started, how he get into Arduino/HCR and how open source hardware has help his business.

About DFRobot:

DFRobot was founded on 2007 in Beijing, China. DFRobot is a professional robot technology developer, especially in open source hardware, mobile robot platform, robot sensors. Their first product is the URM37 V3.2 ultrasonic sensor which is now becoming a really popular distance sensor in robotics market. They are now the biggest robotics online shop in China.

They are very active in open-source hardware community such as Arduino. Besides that they are the official Arduino distributor in China, they also had their own brand “DFRduino” which provides the same features but lower cost.  DFRduino has a  whole range of shields and sensors that can match most education, prototyping, DIY projects and research purpose.

About Dr. Ricky Ye:

CEO & Co-founder of DFRobot. Received his Ph.D. from Nottingham University (UK) in 2007. Involved in several EU core projects as researcher and project manager afterwards. At 2008, he launched an open source robot project called “HCR”, and joined the DFRobot in 2009. He is now focusing on the development of domestic robotics, AI technology and open source hardware.

关于叶琛 博士

DFRobot合伙人兼CEO。2007年完成了英国诺丁汉大学工程学博士课程。随后担任机器人研究所研究员,并参加了一系列欧盟重大项目的研发和管理。2008年发起了开源硬件项目“HCR”,2009年回国参与创建DFRobot并担任CEO至今。主要醉心于家用机器人的开发,人工智能的技术的应用以及开源硬件的发展。

“Independent Filmmaking in the Age of Transmedia”

Independent filmmaker, guest lecturer at NYU, Mr. Vladan Nikolic will bring his new film Zenith and meet with film lovers at Xindanwei.

Independent filmmaking has dramatically changed in the last two decades. Technological advances have significantly increased independent film and media productions, as well as new distribution possibilities, such as video-on-demand and internet streaming. Now, traditional linear storytelling in film and video is increasingly supplanted or replaced by hybrid ‘transmedia’ approaches that function across media platforms and formats. In this workshop, Mr. Vladan Nikolic will be sharing with us his first-hand experience in filmmaking, funding and distribution in the transmedia age, as well as discussing the opportunities for independent films. He will also share his thoughts of storytelling and internet promotion behind the success of Zenith.

We look forward to meet with the film lovers in Shanghai and discuss the global sharing of independent films.

About Vladan Nikolic

Vladan Nikolic is an award-winning filmmaker from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, who lives and works in New York City. He has produced and directed numerous fiction and documentary features. His feature LOVE (2005) premiered at the Tribeca and Venice film festivals to critical acclaim. It went on to win awards at film festivals in Geneva, Switzerland, Barcelona, Spain, and the Best Director Award at the Tiburon International Film Festival, San Francisco. His most recent work includes producing the feature “Here and There,” which won the 2009 Best NY Narrative Award at Tribeca Film Festival, as well as a dozen other awards worldwide, and writing, directing and producing the feature film ZENITH, which is accompanied by an elaborate transmedia campaign. Due to its novel distribution strategy and transmedia approach, ZENITH has become an online cult phenomenon, with millions of downloads worldwide. Vladan also teaches Film at The New School, and at NYU.

关于Vladan Nikolic

三十岁与六十岁,是两代人,也是两面互相对照的镜子。

当三十岁上下的“三明治一代”忙于养育下一代时,可能疏于与父母辈的六十岁一代进行沟通。更可能由于地域距离、代沟、生活习惯、时代背景等差异,与六十岁一代形成沟通障碍。

“中国三明治”网站联同《城市中国》杂志将于12月17日(星期六)下午三时在“新单位”举办主题为“当三十岁遇到六十岁”的养老主题沙龙。探讨“三明治一代”如何减少与父辈的沟通障碍,并为父辈的养老问题做好准备。

2011年10月,《城市中国》杂志出版了《老龄城市:城市老了怎么办?》的专题,探讨快速城市化的中国,家庭养老的种种选择和冲突。此次,“中国三明治”和“城市中国”特邀杂志中采访的两位老人代表参加本次沙龙:

就像約翰凱奇在1957年關於實驗音樂的演講中,他將音樂描述為“一種沒有目的性的演奏”即一種對生命的肯定。它並非是一種在嘈雜中尋求秩序,在創造中尋求進步的企圖,而僅僅是一種在我們生活的當下覺醒的方式。

Artist’s Statement:

I have always been a pessimist, but I am starting to wonder – what is the meaning of being a pessimist? Does a pessimistic ideology make me become a person that I want to be? Human relationships can be complicated, even amongst family, relatives and friends. We face issues of accommodation, transport, desire, hunger and ambition. I am now facing a more complicated society than where I had come from. Familiar language and familiar faces, but some concepts are not familiar, the concept of being a man. How important is my “self”? How much fear do we experience when facing ourselves? What does the fear look like? When we focus on the fear, small things can look insurmountable. Is it the “meaning” that we seek? What should we do after the process of searching for meaning? Repeat ourselves?

About the artist:

Chang Jinchao graduated from the LASALLE College of the Arts with a Masters in Fine Art in 2007, where he had previously received a BA in Fine Art (Printmaking) in 2006 and a Diploma in Jewellery in 2005. He has a BA in Design (Visual Communications) from Shenyang University, and has participated in several group shows, winning awards in jewellery design, drawing and painting. He participated in the Chinese biennale Get It Louder for young creatives in 2007, which toured Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu. He participated ” new contemporaries” in Institue of Contemporary Art in 2007 and 2010. Jinchao has exhibited in China, Turkey and in a major solo show at the Esplanade in Singapore.

作为一个一直在怀疑悲观主义存在意义的悲观主义者,总是期盼着这种意识形态会使我变成一种我想去成为的人。人类复杂的情感关系中,无论是家人,朋友,爱人,我们都不断地在面对有关适应,变幻,欲望与野心的种种即将发生的事情。对于这个比我本身更加复杂的社会,充满着熟悉的语言,熟悉的面孔,但意识是陌生的。我自己有多么重要吗?当我面对我自己的时候,我经历了多少恐惧呢?这种恐惧到底是个什么样子?当我们面对恐惧的情感,很多小事情的发生出现是难以克服的。这就是我所梦寐以求的吗?找到了被缺失的意识之后我还能再做什么呢?不断的重复吗?

关于常锦超:

常锦超,纯艺术硕士学位毕业于新加坡拉萨尔艺术学院,同时拥有版画学士学位以及珠宝制作高等专科文凭。参加多次国内外展览以及获得新加坡国际珠宝设计比赛奖项。主要展览包括07大声展,伊斯坦布尔当代艺术展,新加坡国家滨海艺术中心个人展以及新加坡当代艺术研究院新当代艺术展。

2011第三届上海音乐学院国际电子音乐周将于2011年10月10日至14日举行,由一系列音乐会、声音互动装置展、大师班、讲座、工作坊及国际论坛组成。本届电子音乐周还将增加《电子音乐与音乐新媒体研究》论文征集与评选活动,并出版论文集。
为了鼓励海内外院校的青年学生及从事电子音乐的年青人在电子音乐领域进行创新实验,上海音乐学院国际电子音乐周将继续举办电子音乐作品征集与评选活动。

专家简介
(一)丹尼尔·修诺
作曲家,1963 年出生于瑞士苏黎世。
他与梅拉尼.德肯一起在英国学习作曲并与乔尔.瑞恩和克拉伦斯.巴洛在荷兰的海牙学习电子与电脑音乐。受到米歇尔.维斯维兹的邀请,直到 2005 年,他都作为艺术总监领导着STEIM——荷兰著名的电子器乐工作室以及新乐器之家。在那里,他得以与像弗兰克凡德文、弗兰西斯-玛丽.尤提、奈塔奇卡.奈兹科诺瓦、雷尔蒂夏.斯诺米、弗朗西斯科.洛佩兹、乔恩.罗斯、安妮.拉布格以及斯坦纳.瓦索卡这样的艺术家合作,并且还与荷兰众多的新音乐组织,如斯图加特的 FNM 和莫斯科的 Theremin 研究所进行了合作。丹尼尔目前是 STEIM 的在研作曲家以及创意项目的指导。他的近期作品包括了正在进行中的“KAIROS 工程”,在这个作品中他邀请了多名器乐演奏家来演奏他的创新性传感器乐器。他的音乐会及工作坊令他享誉全欧洲各地和远在约翰内斯堡的索韦托,冰岛,上海以及危地马拉城的街头艺人和孩子们。

(三)雅各布·巴博尼-施林吉

2011 Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week Expert Talks

Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week was founded in 2006. It aims at establishment of an international and pioneering stage in electronic music field in Shanghai. The latest electronic music pieces, sound installations and electronic music technology achievements will be presented in the music week. Meanwhile, it is also a platform for Chinese composers and green-born composers to perform.

The 3rd Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week 2011 will be held from October 10 to October 14(sound installation exhibition will be held from Oct.7 to Oct.16, which consists of a series of concerts, sound arts installation exhibitions, lectures, workshops and international forums. We also will open essay collection, Electronic Music and New Media, and publish this essay collection for the music week.
To encourage teachers, students and young people who are working on electronic music to make innovations on electronic music field, Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week will also list electronic music works collection and selection into schedule.

Bios:
(1)Daniel Schorno
Composer, born in Zurich/Switzerland in 1963. He studied composition in London with Melanie Daiken and electronic and computer music in The Hague/Netherlands, with Joel Ryan and Clarence Barlow. Invited by Michel Waisvisz he lead STEIM – the renown Dutch Studio for Electro Instrumental Music, and home of ‘New Instruments’ – as Artistic Director until 2005. There he collaborated with musicians and artists like Frank van de Ven, Frances-Marie Uitti, Netochka Nezvanova, Laetitia Sonami, Francisco Lopez, Jon Rose, Anne Laberge, Steina Vasulka, and numerous Dutch New Music Ensembles and organisations like the FNM/Stuttgart and the Theremin Institute/Moscow. He is currently STEIM’s composer-in-research and creative project advisor.
Recent works also include the ongoing ‘KAIROS Project’, where he invites instrumental virtuosi to play along with his new sensor instruments. His concerts and workshops have taken him all over Europe and as far afield as Johannesburg’s Soweto, Iceland, Shanghai and the street artists & kids of Guatemala City.

(2)Ludger Brümmer
Born and raised in Germany. Diploma in pedagogy in 1983. Between 1983-1989 composition studies with Nicolaus A. Huber (instrumental) and Dirk Reith ( electroacoustic ) at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen. Jacopo Baboni Schilingi was born in 1971 in Milan and lives in Paris. He studied composition with Fedele graduating in 1994 and he also studied conducting with Parisi. In 1993, he was chosen by IRCAM to enter the course in composition and computer music and in 1996, he studied with Ferneyhough and Huber at Royaumont. In 2010 he received his Phd in computer music. He composes music for soloists, ensembles, orchestras, for installations and movies taking part in the most important international festivals and working with the best known soloists and ensembles in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Cina, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, USA, Ukraine. From 1995 to 2000 he was research composer at IRCAM in Paris. In 1999 Luciano Berio asked him to create the Music Pedagogy Department of Centro Tempo Reale in Florence and he directed since 2005. In 2001, he founded the group of music research PRISMA that he coordinates regularly. He formalized the Hyper–systemic aesthetic and in 2007 he published his theory in France and Italy. The publisher

Bart Weet­jens is developing a new approach to the land ­mine detection problem: train­ing giant pouched rats to detect explosives in minute amounts.Bart Weetjens works with locals in Morogoro, Tanzania to run a world-class facility that trains rats to do something astonishing: sniff out land mines. (The African giant pouched rat, the species used in the project, is wide­spread in the region.) The rats that pass the train­ing — and the same rigorous testing applied to land mine-sniffing canines — become what Weetjens calls “HeroRATS.”

This event is supported by Ashoka, the global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs. Ashoka aims to identify similar entrepreneurs in China whose goal is to be of service to society, and provide them support to make their plans a reality. Citizens of networked societies are increasingly creating digital traces of their preferences, opinions, views and experiences. These traces may be aggregated and data mined using culturally aware lenses to expose both the individual as well as the community. In this presentation we will present the concept of a digital portrait and explore how it makes possible the visualization and interaction of digital personae. As designers, we need to be aware of the potential to computationally understand our users. Such findings can be incorporated beyond the design process; they can become intrinsic to the designed solution itself.

Bio
Aaron Zinman is a co-founder of Empirical Design LLC, a Boston-based design and development shop. A recent graduate of the MIT Media Lab,Zinman continues to build upon his doctoral research to understand strangers online using culturally-minded modeling and visualization. These new applications aim to fundamentally affect the way we interact online. His award-winning work has been covered by PBS, BBC, CBC, CNN, The Atlantic and more. A San Francisco native, he enjoys the three days a year New England weather permits motorcycle riding.

为了鼓励海内外院校的青年学生及从事电子音乐的年青人在电子音乐领域进行创新实验,上海音乐学院国际电子音乐周将继续举办电子音乐作品征集与评选活动。

专家简介
(一)丹尼尔·修诺
作曲家,1963 年出生于瑞士苏黎世。

2011 Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week Expert Talks

Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week was founded in 2006. It aims at establishment of an international and pioneering stage in electronic music field in Shanghai. The latest electronic music pieces, sound installations and electronic music technology achievements will be presented in the music week. Meanwhile, it is also a platform for Chinese composers and green-born composers to perform.

The 3rd Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week 2011 will be held from October 10 to October 14(sound installation exhibition will be held from Oct.7 to Oct.16, which consists of a series of concerts, sound arts installation exhibitions, lectures, workshops and international forums. We also will open essay collection, Electronic Music and New Media, and publish this essay collection for the music week.
To encourage teachers, students and young people who are working on electronic music to make innovations on electronic music field, Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week will also list electronic music works collection and selection into schedule.

Bios:
(1)Daniel Schorno
Composer, born in Zurich/Switzerland in 1963. He studied composition in London with Melanie Daiken and electronic and computer music in The Hague/Netherlands, with Joel Ryan and Clarence Barlow. Invited by Michel Waisvisz he lead STEIM – the renown Dutch Studio for Electro Instrumental Music, and home of ‘New Instruments’ – as Artistic Director until 2005. There he collaborated with musicians and artists like Frank van de Ven, Frances-Marie Uitti, Netochka Nezvanova, Laetitia Sonami, Francisco Lopez, Jon Rose, Anne Laberge, Steina Vasulka, and numerous Dutch New Music Ensembles and organisations like the FNM/Stuttgart and the Theremin Institute/Moscow. He is currently STEIM’s composer-in-research and creative project advisor.
Recent works also include the ongoing ‘KAIROS Project’, where he invites instrumental virtuosi to play along with his new sensor instruments. His concerts and workshops have taken him all over Europe and as far afield as Johannesburg’s Soweto, Iceland, Shanghai and the street artists & kids of Guatemala City.

(2)Ludger Brümmer
Born and raised in Germany. Diploma in pedagogy in 1983. Between 1983-1989 composition studies with Nicolaus A. Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week was founded in 2006. It aims at establishment of an international and pioneering stage in electronic music field in Shanghai. The latest electronic music pieces, sound installations and electronic music technology achievements will be presented in the music week. Meanwhile, it is also a platform for Chinese composers and green-born composers to perform.

The 3rd Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week 2011 will be held from October 10 to October 14(sound installation exhibition will be held from Oct.7 to Oct.16, which consists of a series of concerts, sound arts installation exhibitions, lectures, workshops and international forums. We also will open essay collection, Electronic Music and New Media, and publish this essay collection for the music week.
To encourage teachers, students and young people who are working on electronic music to make innovations on electronic music field, Shanghai Conservatory of Music International Electronic Music Week will also list electronic music works collection and selection into schedule.

Bios:
(1)Daniel Schorno
Composer, born in Zurich/Switzerland in 1963. He studied composition in London with Melanie Daiken and electronic and computer music in The Hague/Netherlands, with Joel Ryan and Clarence Barlow. Invited by Michel Waisvisz he lead STEIM – the renown Dutch Studio for Electro Instrumental Music, and home of ‘New Instruments’ – as Artistic Director until 2005. There he collaborated with musicians and artists like Frank van de Ven, Frances-Marie Uitti, Netochka Nezvanova, Laetitia Sonami, Francisco Lopez, Jon Rose, Anne Laberge, Steina Vasulka, and numerous Dutch New Music Ensembles and organisations like the FNM/Stuttgart and the Theremin Institute/Moscow. He is currently STEIM’s composer-in-research and creative project advisor.
Recent works also include the ongoing ‘KAIROS Project’, where he invites instrumental virtuosi to play along with his new sensor instruments. His concerts and workshops have taken him all over Europe and as far afield as Johannesburg’s Soweto, Iceland, Shanghai and the street artists & kids of Guatemala City.

(2)Ludger Brümmer
Born and raised in Germany. Diploma in pedagogy in 1983. Between 1983-1989 composition studies with Nicolaus A. Huber (instrumental) and Dirk Reith ( electroacoustic ) at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen. Commission and collaboration with choreographer Susanne Linke for the choreography ” Ruhrort “, followed by several international performances in America, Europe and Asia. Ballet music for the “Nederlands Dans Theater”. Collaboration with Christian Moeller for Multimedia Expositions in Tokyo’s Spiral Hall and Lisboa. 1993-2000 Lecturer for composition and analysis at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen. Research fellow at Kingston University London in 2000 and lecturer for composition at the Sonic Arts Research Centre at Queen´s University Belfast. Since April 2003 he is directing the “Institute for Music and Acoustics” at the “Centre for Arts and Media Karlsruhe”. In 2009 he became a member of the
“Academy of the arts“ in Berlin.

(3)Jacopo Baboni Schilingi
Jacopo Baboni Schilingi was born in 1971 in Milan and lives in Paris. He studied composition with Fedele graduating in 1994 and he also studied conducting with Parisi. In 1993, he was chosen by IRCAM to enter the course in composition and computer music and in 1996, he studied with Ferneyhough and Huber at Royaumont. In 2010 he received his Phd in computer music. He composes music for soloists, ensembles, orchestras, for installations and movies taking part in the most important international festivals and working with the best known soloists and ensembles in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Cina, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, USA, Ukraine. From 1995 to 2000 he was research composer at IRCAM in Paris. In 1999 Luciano Berio asked him to create the Music Pedagogy Department of Centro Tempo Reale in Florence and he directed since 2005. In 2001, he founded the group of music research PRISMA that he coordinates regularly. He formalized the Hyper–systemic aesthetic and in 2007 he published his theory in France and Italy. The publisher
Suvini—Zerboni Milano, prints his music. He is the artistic director of the Ensemble of Interactive Music in France.
