Profile

Hi there! I’m Liya. I came to China 5 years ago to pursue a degree in Communication Studies at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. And so it happened that I decided to extend my staying and my studies and do master’s at the same university. Apart from getting my major, experiencing the culture and learning the language, I’ve also developed an interest in Asian and especially in Chinese contemporary art. For a period of time, I was closely observing contemporary Asian art scene and writing for Art Radar Asia, a leading news website covering contemporary Asian art. Owing to my studies, I’ve also engaged in China’s creative industries discourse and right now I’ m writing a dissertation on creative industries of Shanghai. In a nutshell, this dissertation’s exploring how Shanghai is being branded as creative. While looking at the credibility of the policies and city branding strategies that are being implemented to mark Shanghai as creative, meeting government officials and city planners, I would also like to get in touch with creative professionals, people who actually have first hand experience with the city. If anyone would be interested to share their experience and talk about the city, feel free to message me. I will be very happy to hear from you! Your interest, help and time will be much appreciated.
