“Meditations on a Minor History” Part 1 – VOICES SEEN, IMAGES HEARD

11.2009 / Hong Kong / 27m 58s / PAL / aspect ratio 3:4 / color + b/w / Stereo sound A Linda Lai video

Synopsis: A historian, also an interdisciplinary artist, engages in a self-dialogue of how to write the history of her city, Hong Kong. Drilling the disparate mines of sights and sounds, she re-examines the power and limitation of ocular epistemology, which favors visual perception as the dominant form of knowing. As she makes her way through the scanty and homogenous visual documents available, she re-imagines a city that has a precarious history of holding onto its look or preserving its architectural integrity at the interest of real estate development. In response, she re-constructs a visual essay that is also a collage of lost surfaces and shadowy fragments of existence. Her meditation leaves open the potential meanings of each of the sight-and-sound fragments that seem to have spoken to her, asking how feasible it is to access the past.

Artist’s Statement:

Voices Seen, Images Heard is a work of experimental visual historiography based on visual ethnography. I have always been an earnest image-collector – photos, newsreels, movies with real location shots, drawings, found texts and graphics. I attend especially to the less noticeable details of these found objects, and I realize there’s a lot to the ‘surfaces’ of things handed down to us from the past. I naturally find collage a powerful artistic form and strategy, and have adapted it to videography. In the process of it, one intriguing creative problem is how to embed still images in a video work; the other is what to do with available fragments that do not immediately form a rationail whole. What I have done in Voices Seen is to liberate the fragments of found sounds and images from the domination of discourses, juxtapose them with my own video diaries, to let each fragment speak and perform to us.
Voices Seen is the first of a series meditation notes in the form of video essays on the thought process of a historian attempting to re/un-cover the lost sights and sounds of a city whose ‘appearances’ constantly ‘disappear’ by the logic of progress and development. I have been driven by a strong desire to ‘see’ and ‘hear’ for myself… What did people look like? Who walks on the street? How did they talk? What did they sound like? In the light of phenomenological thinking, I highlight the historian’s desire to gain access to, and the impossibility of sensual perceptual dwelling in the past — even in the presence of a huge archive! The irony is – a lot of the Cantonese sounds I’ve found are not comprehensible to me. I look at them and listen – much like a stranger in the midst of a foreign tongue.

BIOGRAPHY:

Linda Lai is a Ph.D. in Cinema Studies (NYU), currently Associate Professor at The City University of Hong Kong’s School of Creative Media, and Leader of Critical Intermedia Arts. She is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and founder of the new media art group The Writing Machine Collective (2004.7) and interdisciplinary art platform The Floating Projects Collective (2010.2). Her works have a strong concern for how language moderates our access to reality, subtly grounded in a feminist sensibility that integrates critical theory, film theories and auto-visual ethnography. Her digital works have been shown in the Hong Kong Art Biennial and funded exhibitions. Her videos often challenge genre boundaries and experiment with found footage, compilation, collage, image-text relations, soundscape, and micro/meta-narrativity. Her video works have been shown in Oberhausen, Barcelona, Paris, Birmingham, Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna, Athens (Ohio), Sydney, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi, Seoul and Hong Kong. She has developed an intimate image style that reflects her broader interest in history and cultural studies.

Generative Image Creation Method Using Optical Flow

There is a tradition of contemporary art that aims to break away from preconceived goals. The aesthetic form and order of the work no longer precede the means or techniques employed. Instead of starting out with a predefined idea of the final outcome, artistic work unfolds as the experimental exploration of a set of technical operations.

The artist starts out by choosing one or more computational procedures (algorithms) without making any assumptions about the aesthetic possibilities that those procedures might be capable of. The working process involves treating the chosen algorithm as a black box that must be opened, analyzed, and transformed.

This procedural approach requires opening the digital black box to discover unforeseen effects that can only arise through experimental exploration. The artist thus refuses to regard technology as the transparent conduit of some previously fixed intention. To use the terminology of actor-network theory, technologies now function as mediators rather than intermediaries.

Flowpoints is a series of digital works, mainly videos and prints, which exemplify an experimental and discovery-oriented method of working with media technologies. This presentation outlines the details of this method, explaining how computer science concepts can function as expressive or artistic media while keeping faith with important tendencies of contemporary art. (Rodriguez)

Linda Lai

A Linda Lai video

01. INTRODUCTION

Some say «Shanghai is not China». Some say Shanghai is the city of the future.

Shanghai is a contemporary city, a city in perpetual movement, building up and out day and night. The population, the architecture, the cuisine, illustrate the superimposition and accumulation of past and present influences.

Shanghai is a mix between ancient and new, between skyscrapers and traditional houses, between cars and bicycles. The city is filled with contrasts which provoke both a charming and uncomfortable feeling, projecting its beauty and strength.

The population of Shanghai takes over the streets and fills them with sounds, movements and objects. Some people work in the streets to earn money. To live, people develop their own tools, they develop street design, design to survive. They make their everyday life objects to cook, cut, sew, transport. Hybrid objects are exhibited in the streets, accumulated, stacked, assembled with function as only concern.

02.CONTENT

Shanghaï street made aims to show the city today: a precarious equilibrium, by putting forward the contrasts which create the energy and the unique atmosphere of this vibrant city.

The work focuses on four main aspects:

- INSPIRATIONAL RESSOURCE FOR CREATIVITY in all artistic fields. The goal of this project is to create applications, which witness our time through the analysis of systems created by the language of Shanghai street furniture.

- HISTORICAL APPROACH since its goal is to show today’s era, to freeze a moment of history in continuous change.

- ECOLOGICAL APPROACH since the players themselves apply a process involving material recuperation and recycling.

- SOCIAL APPROACH as we observe the skills developed by the people in need in order to complete their everyday actions: earn money, eat, clean…

创意新思维:本计划通过对上海街区本身自存的创意美学系统分析,建立一种独特的创意语言;
历史见证:本计划重构这个独特时代的见证:是对一个即将消逝的变革时代的致敬;
生态学意义:可回收再生的生活态度具有生态学意义;

Beam me up – on curatorial online projects“

Time: 14:000-15:00pm Saturday June, 26th

Cost:free

Host:Reinhard Storz

Since fifteen years, Reinhard Storz has been organizing curatorial projects, in which international artists and authors work on the Net, on a common topic. In his lecture Reinhard Storz will report on his recent projects titled “56kTV – bastard channel” and “Beam me up”.

“56kTV” was realized in 2004-2006 with participating artists from Germany, France, India, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Switzerland and USA. “56kTV – bastard channel” is a cross between a television and a web project, a platform in the Internet that tells the story of itself as a television channel. The project employs the techniques and forms of the WWW, but is oriented to suit the formats of TV-channels: news, quiz, documentary soaps, action movies etc. The project also takes on the form of daily programs from the real TV-channels. Individual contributions of the project will be available in the Web only at definite times. “56kTV” will suspend the unrestricted availability of the net and the quick consumability of its contents. A text feature from international authors will accompany the TV-project and the individual art-contributions in the form of an online program-magazine.

Reinhard Storz’s recent project “Beam me up” is an Internet publication with scientific and artistic essays for our present-day appreciation of space, as expanded by the media. Over eighteen months “Beam me up” magazine has regularly been enlarged by new contributions from China, India, Japan, USA, Canada, South America and from different European countries. “Beam me up” integrates all qualities of the digital and networked media technology. Among these are the worldwide participation of authors, the private access at one’s home computer for the audience and the application of different multimedia formats which reminds one, with “Beam me up”, of a virtual art exhibition, a TV channel or an electronic art magazine, according to the contribution.

Reinhard Storz, Art and media historian, editor of www.xcult.org – Net Forum for Culture (since 1995). Co-curator of the digital art collection by HadeK Basel. Teaches Art and Media History at the Academy of Art and Design / University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland. Active in media publishing, focusing on New Media. Works as a curator of online projects with international artists and authors.

Reinhard Storz

xindanwei chitchat edition 10: “Global Identity”-Screening of Experimental Film and Video from Three New-Generation Artists | 新单位茶话会第10期: “全球化身份”语境下的新生代实验影片展映

xindanwei chitchat edition 10: “Global Identity”-Screening of Experimental Film and Video from Three New-Generation Artists

Time: 7:30-9:30pm Friday June, 25th

Cost:free

Host:Jos Diegel, Holly Rodricks, Zhu Xiaowen

Abstract
Identity is based on a person’s position and recognition of self , which must be generated in a certain society.

In a global environment, the notion of “nation” and “culture” enlarge the similarities and differences of people’s identities; however, what kind of standards are we using to limit our identity? If these standards mostly come from external factors, how do we form our individual opinions? If our identities are only confirmed by these external factors, what is inside is only emptiness and loneliness.

In China, metropolitan cities like Shanghai are becoming more and more international, but that does not decrease the sense of distance between “Chinese” and “foreigner”.  That is why we always treat people of different nationalities with different standards. It actually shows the uncertainty of our own identities, because only the uncertain issue needs to be underlined. How to regard our identity in the global environment with open eyes and minds, and how to find our own pursue and position in spite of the consistent change in the external world, is a new question raised by “global indentity”.

This screening introduces three new-generation visual artists from different countries, including Dutch German artist Jos Diegel, Indian American artist Holly Rodricks, and Chinese-born video artist Zhu Xiaowen. All three have international backgrounds. Some of their work is directly related to the theme of Global Identity; other pieces reflect the artists’ critical thinking of social culture in a wider perspective. Their work has been showed many times in Europe and North America and has won various awards; however, this is their first time communicating with a Shanghai-based audience. We hope that this audience will watch their films and videos with an open mind. The screening will take one hour, after which the audience will have the opportunity to communicate with the artists directly. Zhu Xiaowen will be present, while the other two artists will chat with us online.

Jos Diegel

Jos Diegel is half Dutch half German. He lives and works in Offenbach, a city in Germany where various types of immigrants gather together. He received his Diploma from Academy of Arts and Design Offenbach. Jos is a politically motivated painter and filmmaker. His work has been showed nationally and internationally in a number of exhibitions, screenings, and festivals, including BERLINALE 2009 in the European Filmmarket, European Media Art Festival Osnabrück 2009, and his film Größere Leinwände, Längere Hales (Bigger Canvas, Longer Necks) was nominated the German Film Price 2009 in the category of experimental film.

Holly Rodricks

Holly Rodricks was born in Chicago. She received her BFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago, with a concentration in Video and Photography. Holly is currently an MFA candidate at Syracuse University in the Department of Transmedia, with an emphasis in Art Video. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally in a number of exhibitions, screenings, and festivals.

Her family emigrated to the United States a few years before she was born. With them came a rich cultural legacy, much of which conflicted with typical American paradigms. While not always evident on the surface, her artistic process is largely informed by this consistent discord.
It an attempt to reconcile these difference and to better understand her role, a portion of Holly’s research is dedicated to a reclamation of her heritage through the study of Indian history and language. In addition, she regularly works with her parents and grandparents, investigating their experiences, their reasoning, and how their values influence her position. The result is a painfully complex balance of embracing certain expectations and discarding others.

Zhu Xiaowen

Zhu Xiaowen was born in Shanghai, China. She received her BA in Film, TV and Media Arts from Tongji University. Currently she is a MFA Art Video student in Syracuse University, USA. During her undergraduate study, she did an exchange program at Academy of Arts and Design Offenbach in Germany. Her experience in Europe and America has a unique influence on her artistic creation. She works mostly with documentary film, experimental video and multi-media installations. Richly influenced by different cultures, she has a strong interest in the notion of “international identity” that reflects certain social and cultural issues based on her own understandings.
Zhu Xiaowen is a visual poet, social critic and aesthetic researcher. Her work has been showed in a number of exhibitions and festivals all over the world, including Strozzina Art Space (Florence,Italy), Sainsbury Center  for Visual Arts (Norwich, UK), Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago, USA), Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, USA), Festival Junger Talente (Frankfurt, Germany) and etc. Her one-minute short film Carousel Travel got the jury award of one-minute documentary film festival in DOK Munich 2010.

Jos Diegel, Holly Rodricks, Zhu Xiaowen

Jos Diegel

Holly Rodricks

Holly Rodricks

Entrepreneur Commons launch @xindanwei |

Filed under: Events — parisyxc @ 2:00 pm

[lang_en]
Entrepreneur Commons launch @xindanwei
Time: 2:00pm Sunday June, 20th

This is an Invitation Only Event, please send your name, title, contact information and introduction of your organization to xindanwei@gmail.com if you wish to receive the invitation. We will contact you shortly to confirm your participation.

What is Entrepreneur Commons @xindanwei:
Entrepreneur Commons @xindanwei is the China Chapter of Entrepreneur Commons (http://www.entreco.org), a not-for-profit program to help entrepreneurs find advice, mentoring, share resources and have opportunities to raise funding.

It includes several components:
- an international peer-support program, with chapters currently in 11 cities: San Francisco (5 chapters), Menlo Park, Oakland (CA), Palo Alto, New York, Miami, Chicago, Paris (2 chapters), Madrid, Shanghai, Seoul.
- a global peer-learning platform http://entreco.supercoolschool.com.
- moving forward, entrepreneurs will also have access to financial partners, including a fund (currently being raised) with a focus on debt financing rather than equity financing.

What is the format of the meeting?
The program consist of monthly closed-group meetings (5 to 10 entrepreneurs per group) where entrepreneurs can share successes and challenges, so that all can benefit from good news and all can contribute to resolve issues.

It also includes regular (semi-annual) open forums (Social Innovation China) with an extended group of partners from the entrepreneurial ecosystem, as well as regular adhoc classes provided through the online peer-learning platform.

There is no dollar cost for attending, the real cost of the meetings is the opportunity cost of the time attendees invest. The meeting format and schedule is designed to foster deep relationships and comraderie inside the groups, which will foster openness, collaboration, and sustainable support structures over time. Participants will gain proportionally and directly from the time they invest.

Where we are today:
There are today approximately 200 entrepreneurs spread over 15 chapters in 11 cities, and we will be expanding further in Asia, (Shanghai, Bangalore) in Europe (Barcelona, Athens, Edinburgh), and new cities in the US.

What you get beyond the local meetings:
- Access to the EntrepreneurU training program, for more intensive learning and knowledge sharing
- As a social entrepreneur, you may apply for workspace funding provided by Social Innovation Center of China YouChange Social Entrepreneur Foundation to start your office among Xindanwei coworking community.
- Access to Angelsoft Deal management, which allows us to establish a pipeline that can be accessed by financial partners and that will be used to disperse money once the Entrepreneur Commons fund(s) have been established. Our funding model and goal is to establish several regional funds rather than one large fund, because investment is local business.
