Covers a range of projects and how to bring these projects from the conceptual idea stage into something tangible.

Ben and Tom from London will present their iphone guidebook project http://www.node72.net/ and http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/node72-hong-kong/id330041037?mt=8. The travel guide project came about through their shared interest in travel. They really have travelled a fair amount of the globe- from North Korea to Route 66.. but they wanted to create something that went back to the roots of travel and put across the best experience of city- whatever that was – and that is still what they are trying to do with it.

Sustainability in Shanghai afternoon with de Baak and MSC Global

Time: 17:00 – 18:30, May 7, 2010

Cost:free

A delegation of 20 students of the Master Study Club of Global Stakeholder Management of the Rotterdam School of Management will join de Baak at xindanwei May 7th. Here an afternoon program will be facilitated with a city-puzzle-search and a discussion where students will present their findings and discuss with those who are interested.

Hopefully more Chinese will join them and they will explore the city by themselves. They will look for examples of business activities, or anything in general, that can possibly be organized more sustainable or corporately responsible. Moreover they will look for examples that are sustainable, or corporately responsible, and quite unique for Chinese standards. Students will then come back to xindanwei, and will discuss their findings with the participants of the weekly Friday-Chit-Chat group, that will be about Sustainability in Shanghai and China this time.

Each group of Dutch Students is still looking for at least one Chinese student to join them in this afternoon-project full of sustainability and new ideas. If you are interested to meet fellow students interested in sustainability, corporate social responsibility and green issues, please feel free to contact m.lockefeer@debaak.nl in order to register the voluntary participant  for this afternoon project and please come to xindanwei at 13:00 on that day.

Platform as Method: Strategies for Counter-Cartographic Research in Beijing, Ningbo and Shanghai

Seminar: Laboratory on Urban Research, http://urbanresearchlab.net/
Presenters: Ned Rossiter
Date: Sunday 25 April, 2010
Time: 2-4pm
Fee: free

Abstract

Platforms organize. They bring bodies and brains into relation. While they require highly distributed formats of digital communication and translation, platforms must connect with off-line worlds. Practices of collaborative constitution hold a generative capacity that invent new institutional forms. When multiplied across time and space, platforms connect seemingly disparate events along circuits of experience and experimentation. The work of platforms at once tests and produces concepts. Platforms address contingency and movements as constitutive methods of analysis and organization.

This paper asks how the organization of platforms can serve as a research tool and method for transcultural mapping in urban settings. Taking examples from urban research projects in Beijing, Ningbo and Shanghai, the paper investigates how the city becomes the site of a research platform that combines online and offline methods to gather researchers from across the world and bring them into collaborative relation with local participants through workshops, site visits, symposia, exhibitions, mailing lists, blogs and publishing. The aim is to flee the data-mined, self-referential universe of social networking sites by building a multilingual environment for collaborative invention and the common production of knowledge.

Language Power Struggles in Shanghai

Time: 16:30 – 18:30, April 23, 2010

Cost:free

When two people from different countries meet, how do they decide what language to speak?  Does this work the same way in Shanghai as in other places?  If you’re a foreigner, does it sometimes feel that Chinese people don’t want you to speak in Chinese?  Do you feel that you “should” speak the language of China in China?  If you’re Chinese, do you feel that foreigners “should” speak to you in English?  Do they sometimes seem resistant to this?  These topics are all related to the sociolinguistic topic of “Language Power Struggles in Shanghai,” a phenomenon which affects us all.  The talk is given by John Pasden, founder of AllSet Learning.  You are invited to come and share your own experiences.  The talk is bilingual; feel free to use either English or Chinese to participate.
