[lang_en]3rd Ring Out: China

A talk and discussion at Xindanwei featuring UK artists Zoë Svendsen and Simon Daw, Co-Directors of 3rd Ring Out – an innovative project which uses art to explore climate change

Time: Saturday 9 July 2011, 14h00-17h00
Venue: Xindanwei, 50 Yongjia Rd., Shanghai
Language: English & Chinese
Cost: FREE and invitation only – with fresh coffee, tea, fruit and snacks provided
Organizers: 3rd Ring Out, Metis Arts, British Council China, Connections through Culture, Xindanwei

Are you an artist? Are you interested in climate change?

Zoë Svendsen and Simon Daw are UK artists and co-directors of 3rd Ring Out.  This unusual and innovative multi-media performance and installation toured the UK in 2010 and 2011, engaging with audiences to enable them to make decisions on how to respond to scenarios of a climate-changed future in 2033.

In partnership with Xindanwei, Zoë and Simon want to invite artists, environmentalists, climate scientists and people working at the intersection of these disciplines to an event which looks at the way in which art can address, explore and mediate questions triggered by climate change.

Please ‘save the date’ and join Zoë and Simon at Xindanwei on 9 July to hear more about 3rd Ring Out, and to share ideas and views on the relationship between art and climate change in China.

Schedule:
The event will use ‘open space’ methods to encourage self-directed group discussion, normally three or four groups. Time will be allowed for each of the groups to feed back towards the end of the afternoon.

Important: This is an invitation only event.
Zoë and Simon are keen to meet a broad cross section of people who have an insight into:
· Climate impacts in China – and their impacts on cities/urban living
· Planning issues around adaptation and change
· The cultural perception of climate change in China
· Emergency planning

We are also keen to meet artists and potential collaborators across the following disciplines, who might be interested in working on a Chinese version of 3rd Ring Out in 2012 as part of British Council China’s UK Now Festival:
· Writers
· Sound artists (composers and/or with experience of computer sound design)
· Video designers
· Interactive computer media creators
· Performers/live artists (especially if they also have one of the above skills and/or make their own work)

The focus of the event is on researching climate science and climate change. If you are interested by the subject and can connect with and contribute to some of the ideas behind 3rd Ring Out, please send an invitation request to us by calling 021-34280783 within office hours (9h30 – 18h00) or by sending an email to xindanwei@gmail.com with the following information provided:
- Your full name
- Your occupation and specialized area
- Which company or organization do you work for?
- You email address
- Your mobile number (Optional)

Thank you for your collaboration!

Poor Coffee – An Art Project|

Filed under: Events — Tags: — Cozi @ 6:34 pm

[lang_en]
Poor Coffee – An Art Project

Poor Coffee is an art project by artist ZHENG Yuan-Han. It is now presented at Xindanwei and can be ordered from the Xinkafei menu.

Duration: 26th May 2011 – To Be Informed
Location: Xindanwei, 50 Yongjia Rd., Shanghai
Cost: 35 rmb/cup
Artist:  ZHENG Yuan-Han

About the Poor Coffee:
This project is about Mixing, Lineage, Time, Memory, Emotion and Life. By mixing two common tastes from daily life, the traditional information within each of them evolves into a brand new way of thinking and experience.

Poor Coffee is a beverage composed of authentic coffee and fermented Pu’er tea. Looked at from the perspective of its timeline, its cultural background and tradition, Pu’er and coffee are heavily symbolic beverages.

“Poor Coffee” is both a public installation and a space to provide a service. It can be set up in a particular place by hand, and then exists and serves as a node for people to meet in. Through the Poor Coffee installation, the information being conveyed and exchanged in this particular space can be stored in the artwork, thus, this exchange of information conveys the new thinking and experience which are advocated by Poor Coffee.

The new thinking embodied in the drink considers how, in our short lives, we can experience a state which is more peaceful, more open, more tolerant and integrating wisdom within this impulsive and chaotic world.

This new experience of coffee together with Pu’er tea, combines eachs long history as well as their beautiful legends. They are also similar in colour and the emotion, and their profoundness lies in their deep colour. Coffee is refreshing with its distinctive aroma, tasting bitter at first, followed by sweetness. Similarly, Pu’er tea’s bittersweet taste leaves people with an aftertaste of a legacy of history and reverie.

Coffee finds itself in every corner of the Western world and is closely related to space as a form of culture. Tea enjoys the same position in Asian cultures, such as China, Japan and India. Tea is also a noble beverage in Western countries with an exotic touch, and it becomes a key product in our time advocating the concept of nature, environmental protection and the maintenance of health. Pu’er itself enjoys a long history and its nature, colour and taste resemble those of coffee to a considerable degree. The combination of these two drinks can generate a special emotion and multi-level taste, which also embodies the diversity of culture.

Confronted with globalisation, the turbulence and shocks in the world; facing terrorism, assassination, coups, tsunami, earthquakes and the decline in morality in human beings – what has become of us? Where have all the glorious ideas of the philosophers gone? What about the humanism that we used to have? Poor Coffee is more than just a new taste and a new cultural thought, it is also a time machine which makes time stand still. It’s a complement to life, and it’s about a hope for “slowness”.

The form of the piece:
The artwork “Poor Coffee” can be presented in various forms. It can be as large as a real cafe or as small as a sign or a mobile installation. It is omnipresent. Each one of the potential forms can be the external experience conveying the inner information within the piece.
The piece provides free WIFI on site when displayed. The surroundings will be integrated with the piece for the external experience that Poor Coffee creates.

Visit the project’s website: Poor Coffee for more information.

Architecture and Vision: from Pyramids to Spacecraft
A lecture by Andreas Vogler

Time: 16:00 – 18:00, Saturday May 14, 2011
Location: Xindanwei, 50 Yongjia Rd, Shanghai
Language: English
Cost: 40RMB/person (including fresh ground coffee, tea and fruits)
Organizer: Architecture and Vision; Xindanwei

About the lecture:
Architecture, Aerospace, People, Beauty, Nature, Genius Loci

Drawing inspiration from nature and scientific progress, Architecture and Vision aims to improve the quality of life through a wise use of technologies and available resources to create a harmonious integration of humans, technology and nature by design.

The company has been founded by Italian architect Arturo Vittori and Swiss architect Andreas Vogler. With experience in aerospace and architecture, Architecture and Vision is merging these skills to create a vision of the future, which is expressed through their projects. AV has gained a particular interest and passion for the exploration of space, and is engaged in developing projects for aerospace — a field in which multidisciplinarity and innovation are required to the utmost. To design for space requires researching and developing solutions that assure the optimal use of available resources, with minimal consumption, activating processes of valorization and waste treatment in order to guarantee sustained self-sufficiency. A similar approach and methodology applied to architecture and design can lead to the improvement of life on Earth.

The projects presented range from houses and sculptures, which clean the air, tents, which cool themselves using the local solar energy in the desert to mobile pavilions and towers, which walk. Planning Space Habitats and Hygiene Units for developing countries are not a contradiction, but a clear consequence of understanding the preciousness of resources like clean air or potable water. It is a the economy of the third wave AV is designing for, where people and their designed objects are not just consuming and polluting the clean resources of nature, but are actively producing them. We live in a time, where people can easily build robots or wind machines to power their homes. The openess of the design process fostered at AV allows to move into different fields quickly and push innovation.

In the age of ubiquitous internet communication and kitchen-built robots, where sophisticated technology not only becomes cheaply available, but also fun, we see our planet from outside, we not only learn how fragile it is, but also how much potential we have. Design is in its deepest sense the exploration of the yet unknown.

The Architecture and Vision is invited by Swissnex to show their traveling exhibition “FROM PYRAMIDS TO SPACECRAFT” during the “2011 Shanghai International Science & Art Exhibition” organized by the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology (SAST). The exhibition will take place from 13 to 22 May 2011 at Shanghai Pudong Expo.

Andreas Vogler
